Chimpanzee tracking is one of the top wildlife activities in Uganda. It allows visitors to hike through the forests with expert guides, following chimpanzee troops as they move, feed, and interact in their natural environment.
Kibale National Park – The best place for chimpanzee tracking, with over 1,500 chimpanzees and a high success rate of sightings.
Kyambura Gorge (Queen Elizabeth National Park) – Also known as the "Valley of Apes," this stunning gorge offers a unique experience of tracking a small but active chimpanzee group.
Budongo Forest (Murchison Falls National Park) – Located near the famous Murchison Falls, this forest is another great destination for tracking chimpanzees.
Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve – A lesser-known but rewarding location for chimpanzee encounters.
Chimpanzee tracking is available year-round, but the best time is during the dry seasons: June to August and December to February. During these months, the forest trails are easier to navigate, and chimpanzee sightings are more predictable.
The activity starts with a briefing by the park rangers.
You will hike through the rainforest in search of the chimpanzees.
Once found, you can spend one hour observing them in their natural setting.

If one hour is not enough, you can choose the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHE), which allows you to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated chimpanzee group. This activity is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and researchers.
The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience is only available in Kibale National Park, where researchers and guides help visitors understand the process of habituating wild chimpanzees to human presence.
