Kenya Travel Guide

For the best travel tips and up-to-date information, Go2Africa offers expert advice on planning your trip to Kenya. Whether you're interested in safaris, wildlife, or exploring local culture, here's everything you need to know before you go.

Safety & Security

Many first-time travelers wonder, “Is it safe to visit Kenya?” Despite some past incidents, the main tourist areas, like the Masai Mara, remain safe. The country has stepped up security at airports (especially Jomo Kenyatta and Wilson) and hotels across Nairobi. Rest assured, we only recommend places we've personally visited. Our experts, including Ashley Gerrand, Mary Keet, and Anja Naude, felt very secure on their recent trips.

All Journey Smiles travelers also have access to a 24/7 emergency hotline, providing extra peace of mind. For more on safety, check our blog on traveling safely in Kenya.

Money & Spending

The Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the official currency. While US Dollars are accepted for some activities (like hot-air balloon safaris), it’s best to use Kenyan Shillings for everyday expenses like meals, drinks, and souvenirs.

Avoid US Dollar bills printed before 2003 due to counterfeit concerns. The safest bills are those printed after 2006. ATMs are widely available, and most credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express) are accepted.

Banking hours: 9 AM - 3 PM (Monday to Friday), 9 AM - 11 AM (first and last Saturday of the month).

Tipping

Tipping is common in Kenya for good service. A 10% tip is standard at city restaurants and bars unless a service charge is included. For more detailed tipping advice, contact our Africa Safari Experts.

Climate

  • Summer temperatures: 20°C / 68°F to 34°C / 93°F
  • Winter temperatures: 18°C / 64°F to 29°C / 84°F
  • Rainy season: Mid-March to June (long rains), October to December (short rains)

For the best times to visit and experience wildlife, check our guide on Kenya's climate and wildlife viewing seasons.

What to Pack

For your safari, pack light, casual clothes in neutral colors (avoid white, black, and blue). A warm jacket is useful for evening game drives. In cities, casual dress is acceptable, but modesty is appreciated, especially for women. Swimsuits are fine at the beach, but cover up in public areas.

Etiquette

Kenya is a conservative society, especially in Muslim communities. Always ask for permission before taking photos of locals, as they may expect compensation. The people are generally friendly, humorous, and helpful, making your travels enjoyable.

Flights & Getting Around

You can book flights through Journey Smiles for convenience. Here are the major airports in Kenya:

  • Jomo Kenyatta International Airport: Nairobi’s main airport, located 13 km outside the city, connects to major destinations like the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Mombasa.
  • Wilson Airport: A regional airport 90 minutes from Jomo Kenyatta, used for domestic flights and safari locations.
  • Moi Mombasa International Airport: About 10 km from Mombasa, this airport serves the Kenyan coast.

Chartered flights are popular for avoiding bumpy roads, and 4X4 vehicles are used for transfers to safari lodges. Road transfers between airports and popular destinations often use mini-buses with good viewing opportunities.

Visa & Passport Requirements

Most visitors, including those from the UK, US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, need a visa to enter Kenya. Visas are valid for three months from the date of arrival and can be purchased upon arrival at the airport. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned travel date.

If traveling onward to other East African countries (like Tanzania or Uganda), you can obtain visas in Nairobi for about US$50 each.

About Kenya

History & Economy

Kenya gained independence from Britain in 1963, and has since developed into East Africa's most advanced economy. Agriculture is the largest sector, but tourism plays a major role in the country's GDP. Jomo Kenyatta, the first president, promoted unity with the motto "Harambee" (pull together).

People & Culture

Kenya’s youthful population is diverse, with various ethnic groups, including the famous Maasai. English and Swahili are the official languages, and most people are Christian, with a significant Muslim population along the coast.

Landscape & Wildlife

Kenya is known for its stunning landscapes, from the Rift Valley to the Indian Ocean. The country's parks and reserves are home to the famous Big 5 and other wildlife, making it a top safari destination. The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara is a highlight, and Kenya’s conservation efforts ensure the protection of its wildlife.

Whether you're visiting the savannahs, exploring the coast, or enjoying the vibrant culture, Kenya offers a wealth of experiences for travelers.
